Water is a molecular compound because covalent bond is present within water molecule. Water molecule is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Two single covalent bonds are present between hydrogen atoms and oxygen atom. Because of electronegativity difference between hydrogen and oxygen atom, oxygen gets partial negative charge and hydrogen gets partial positive charge. Water molecule becomes a polar molecule due to partial charges. Hydrogen bonding is present between the molecules of water. Moreover, in ionic compounds ionic bond is present so, water is not a ionic compound.
