Korea is a peninsula which is part of the Asian continent - more specifically, the eastern part of Asia. However, Korea is currently split into North Korea and South Korea (as of 2012), and the term 'Korea' is applicable to both of these nations.
Korea has existed as a unified country at various points in its history, most recently under Japanese rule at the turn of the twentieth century.
Following World War II, Korea was split into two separate 'occupied territories' along the 38th parallel. The north was under Soviet occupation, whilst the south fell under the jurisdiction of other allied forces, chiefly the United States. The divide was meant to be a temporary solution that would allow time for a formal joint government to be instated, but the two states remain separate (and hostile) to this date.

North Korea

North Korea is known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. It is an East Asian nation located on the northern part of the Korean peninsula.  The capital of North Korea is Pyongyang.
North Korea has strained relations with several western countries, including the United States, who it resents for its military intervention in the Korean War of 1950 - a conflict that is still in a state of armistice to this very day.

South Korea

South Korea is also known as Republic of Korea. It is the more developed, and densely populated of the the two nations, and is recognized globally for its successful economic advancement. It is the 14th largest global economy in terms of gross domestic product and is a world leader in transportation, energy, and science & technology,
