Formation of North and South Korea
North and South Korea were both formed following the surrender of Japan during World War II. The two countries were set up as 'occupied zones' and divided in two: With Soviet forces occupying the north, and American forces occupying the south.
The arrangement was intended as a temporary solution that would buy the allied forces of United States, U.S.S.R, China and the United Kingdom time to put together a permanent and unified government for the peninsula.
Due to Russian influence, the rise of communism, and cold war politics, irreconcilable differences emerged between the two territories - which resulted in the Korean War of 1950. An armistice agreement was signed in 1952, but no peace treaty was ever agreed and hostilities remain between the two countries to this date. (2012)
