Shale is basically a fine sedimentary rock. It comprises of clay as well as mud. It is distinguished by slender laminate infringement with an uneven curvature crack, often fragile and typically similar to the often-indistinguishable bedding flat surface. This property is known as the fissility. Shales are basically deposited in water that generally moves in a very slow movement. They are mostly noticeable in lake and lagoonal deposits, in river deltas, on floodplains and offshore of beach sands. They can also be deposited on the continental ledge, in comparatively deep, quiet water.

Another type of shale is the Black shale. This formed due to the richness in unoxidized carbon. Shale's that are subject matter to heat and force alter into a firm, fissile, and metamorphic substance recognized as slate, which is frequently used in building structure.

Shale is a type of sedimentary rock. Shale has fissile nature, it consists of clay and slit sized particles,it is a type of detrital sedimentary rocks. The particles present in such kinds of rocks are so much small in size that they can't visible with naked eye. We can only see those particles by using great magnification .That's why it is quiet difficult to study shale. It is also an important fact the grains are not only flat but they are tabular as well and usually they are tightly packed as well. That's why it's quiet difficult for fluids to pass through it.

It is not as prominent as limestone and sandstone. Weathering affect it shale very easily so it normally from a cover of soil that hide the non-weathered rock below it. The shale is often used for fine grained detriatal rock. It breaks into block, after that name mud stone is applied to shale. It serves as raw materials, pottery, bricks, tile and china clay. If shale is mixed with limestone it is used for making Portland cement as well. It is a possibility in coming year that one type of shale known as oil shale will be very use full and economical in the future.
