SAHARA DESERT
The Sahara desert covers most of North Africa, is the largest desert in the world. From north to south Sahara is 800 and 1,200 miles and at least 3,000 miles (4,800 km) from east to west. The Sahara desert is so massive Africa is split up into two regions that which lies above or forms part of the Sahara and the rest of Africa south of the Sahara. On the west, Sahara is bordered by the Atlantic ocean and on the east by the red sea, and to the north are the Atlas Mountain and Mediterranean Sea.
Cave paintings that are about 5,000 years old, have been found in the desert. They show people hunting big game animals. This gives us some idea on what Sahara used to be like. Today it is too hot and dry for these animals to survive. Temperatures rise up to at least 110 digress and the ground surface can be to hot too touch. The desert gets hotter toward the equator as the sun beats down directly overhead.
With such a hostile environment it is hard to believe that there is such life on the Sahara desert. But people, plants, and animals have managed to adapt to the way they live in order to survive. These adoptions may have taken thousands of years to evolve, or come about. Water is a race and precious in the desert. Only plants that can obtain and hold on to the little water available can survive
