The nervous system comprises of the brain, the spinal cord and millions of nerves. It is made up of nerve cells that are usually long and think like fibers. Impulses travel along the length of these nerve cells or fibers in only one direction. There are two types of nerve cells. The sensory nerve cells carry the nerve impulses from the sensory organs to the central nervous system. The motor nerve cells carry impulses from the central nervous system to the muscles and glands.
A simulated sense organ sends nerve impulses through the sensory nerve fibers to the central nervous system. The brain figure out the best response to the stimulus received and sends a message to the relevant muscles or gland in the form of nerve impulses. These impulses travel along the motor nerve fibers to reach their destination.
Between each nerve cell is a tiny gap, called the synapse. Impulses from weak stimuli cannot jump this gap. Therefore, a large number of stimuli do not have a response.
For example, if you touch a flame, you would quickly remove your hand because of the heat. In this case, the stimulus is the heat and the response is the quick moving of the hand.
The nervous system in animals plays the part of managing the actions of the muscles, supervises the organs, constructs and also prevents input from the senses, and commences actions.
Some of the well-known participants of the nervous system are the neurons and nerves who play the part of organizing. Normally there are three vital components of the nervous system, which are the brain, the spine and nerves. The brain has three chief divisions which work together with nervous system; they are cerebrum, the cerebellum and the medulla.
The primary task of the cerebrum consists of high-order thinking and learning, the cerebellum administers learned automatic bodily tasks like walking, jumping and running. The medulla takes care of the fundamental body activities like breathing and digestion.
