The Greenhouse Effect is the process by which the Earth is warming steadily due to its absorption of radiation by the planet's atmosphere. Energy leaves the Sun through Radiation. These radioactive waves are then reflected back into space. (This is because the energy in the atmosphere is equal to the solar radiation that is entering it.) The radiation entering the atmosphere is split into two types of radiation when it is reflected back; Solar Radiation and Infrared Radiation. However 70% of this radiation is absorbed by the Earth due to Greenhouse Gasses (like Carbon Dioxide) and the Ozone Layer. This is a protective layer around the Earth that protects the Earth from harmful rays from the Sun. The increase in harmful gasses like Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere that comes from burning fuels and cars on the road is firstly damaging the Ozone Layer, and secondly is causing more and more of the Sun's radiation to be absorbed. This causes the Earth to become hotter. Scientists believe that this will cause dramatic climate change and cause the ice-caps to melt.

It is a situation when the Earth gets much warmer than usual. This happens when some of the gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, known as "greenhouse gases". The reason is that these gases act like the glass in the greenhouse, allowing solar radiation to pass through the atmosphere but trap and re-emit the infrared radiation leaving Earth. This helps to keep the Earth warm. This causes the adversity and a drastic climate change in weather, a continued rise in temperature gives longer and drier summers as well as shorter and wetter winters in many parts of temperate regions. It would bring about a higher rate of evaporation, leading to more rain falling in tropical regions. The rise in sea level would bring about coastal flooding of low-lying areas, and also prevented river waters from flowing into the sea, causing intense damage to the areas nearer to the sea, causing humanitarian crisis to break out into a global and world-wide epidemic with catastrophic result.
