Life sciences could be described as the study of any living thing. This could be in the form of plants, animals or humans and mainly looks at the biological side of their existence; this includes what makes them, how they function and how they evolve and breed. Life sciences does not deal so much with the behavioral side of animals and humans and therefore topics such as psychology are generally not thought to be a life science.

The most well-known form of life science is biology; it is well heard of and commonly studied in schools. The study of biology covers a broad range of topics, from the human body and how it works to how plants receive light and breed.

Life science would not include topics such as physics - the study of forces - or chemistry - the study of elements - as these are not strictly living organisms and this is what life science is restricted to. In the same way the study of rocks is not included, although life science does look at habitats of living organisms so it may be that rocks are studied in simpler terms as a part of a study of habitats.

There are many, many examples of life science but some of the more common subjects can include ecology, zoology and genetics. Ecology is the study of climates and how organisms can grow, survive and live in different climate conditions. Zoology is the study of the care of animals, it would look at how animals live, how they breed, their internal workings such as their heart, intestinal system and brain. Genetics looks at DNA and how living organisms are made, and how they change depending on their genetic make up.

As you can see from all these examples, the commonality is that they are all subjects surrounding the study of living things.
