Well earthquakes are due to tectonic shifts. Tectonics are what all land mass sits on. So when an earthquake occurs then the Tectonics shift significantly but not too noticeably. The only time it is noticeable is over long periods of time such as the theory of Pangaea.

Well earthquakes can kill people, it goes to haiti. 1,000 people died from the earthquake in haiti.
