I have read that humans have 10000 taste buds. However they are not only on the tongue as one would expect. Taste buds are found mainly on the tongue but also under the tongue, on the cheeks, the roof of the mouth and few on the lips.

For the information of the above and persons who may be interested in this question humans have 10,000 taste buds compared to a dog which has 700 .
However when it comes to a comparison of smell dogs have 250,000,000 sensors compared to 5.000.000 with humans, a sugnificent increase.
This is why they are so efficient in detection for drugs, buried bodies ect.
In addition to this dogs have very addvanced receptory nommes in theire brain to receave this information.
When dogs are on a scent and appear to be sniffing, each time they sniff the information they receive is recorded and retained to be added to the following receptions to formalate a decision of the situation they are in.
They do say dogs are mans best friend now we know why.

Taste buds or gustatory calyculi are sensory organs that give us information on the taste of food that we eat. There are seven basic tastes. These are: bitter, salty, sour, sweet, astringent, pungent, and umami. The average human is said to have approximately a thousand taste buds.

What is interesting to note is that though there is a higher concentration of taste buds on the tongue, all are not solely located on the tongue. Some are found under the tongue, others are seen on the inside of your cheeks, and some are located on the roof of your mouth. Yet other taste buds can be found on the lips. These taste buds are the ones that are particularly sensitive to salt. Our taste buds have average lifespan of 7-10 days. Most of us lose half of our taste buds by age sixty. Age, disease, drugs or trauma could cause a shortcoming in the function of taste.
