Some rocks are hard. Diamond is the hardest rock. Some rocks such as chalk are not so hard. We use rocks in many ways. We construct buildings out of rocks. We also use rocks called precious stones in jeweler. Diamonds, rubies and sapphires are precious stones.
Rocks are used in several other ways. Most rocks have rough surfaces. Look at some natural rocks with a magnifying glass. You will find that they are made up of small grains. These are called minerals. Some rocks are made of only one mineral. Others have several minerals. They may be of different colors.

Some of the minerals found in rocks contain metals such as iron or aluminum. These rocks are dug out from the earth and the metals are taken out for our use. Clay has very tiny pieces of rocks. It therefore feels smooth. Sand has larger pieces, which can easily be seen. Fine china pots are made of clay called kaolin, which contains a mineral called kaolinite. The chalk with which you write on the blackboard is a soft. Chalk is made up of white rock. Glass is made from quartz sand-tiny grains of mineral called quartz. Blackboards are made from slate- a dark rock.
