There are 41 islands. The Caribbean consists of the West Indian islands. These islands are subdivided into two groups, namely the British West Indies and the French West Indies. The West Indies is made up of the following islands: The Bahamas, the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico) and the Lesser Antilles (which is further subdivided into the Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands.)     The British West Indies islands are Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, the Bahamas (New Providence), Barbados, Cozumel, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, the Netherlands Antilles (Bonaire, Curacao, Saba and St. Eustatius), Puerto Rico, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, , St. Vincent and the Grenadines, San Andres, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Tortola and Virgin Gorda) and the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas).   Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthelemy (St. Barts) and St. Martin/Sint Maarten (a part of the Netherlands Antilles) are collectively called the French West Indies.

There are a lot of islands but I think one of the beautiful ones is Curacao. The island is very beautiful, with white sands, great places for scuba diving and snorkeling and a very good holiday destination.

This 'blurt' has become a junk page because those who write an answer have NOT quoted their SOURCE to any number they put here and how relates to any kind of true fact!

Extracted from several recognised authoritative sources, here is a list of major country 'islands of the Caribbean' (does NOT include mainland's of the Americas and this has 27). HOWEVER the are thousands of islands close to, and part of,  all of these countries: Anguilla has 21; Antigua-and-Barbuda has 37; Aruba (4); Bahamas (501 apprx, largest being Andros Island not Bahama); Barbados used to be 3 (but Pelican Island is now absorbed into Barbados through land reclamation, 1956-1961); British Virgin Islands (43); Cayman Islands (10); Cuba (23); Dominica (2); Dominican Republic (13); Grenada (39); Guadeloupe (38); Haiti (6); Honduras (6); Jamaica (26); Martinique (50); Montserrat (3); Netherlands Antilles (25, this includes half of Saint Martin); Puerto Rico (142); Saint Barthélemy (13); Saint Kitts-and-Nevis (20); Saint Lucia (17); Saint Martin (8); Saint Vincent-and-the-Grenadines (39); Trinidad-and-Tobago (21); Turks-and-Caicos Islands (58); and United States Virgin Islands (81).

Note: Historically some 'mainland' countries have been linked with the Caribbean (because of their vicinity to the Caribbean Sea) for example Colombia; this country does have 10 islands in the Caribbean Sea (known as San Andrés-and-Providencia). Others also have this distinction - Mexico (4 islands); Nicaragua (4); mainland-USA (3); Venezuela (15).

The caribbean islands are over 7,000 islands. Not all are inhabited, but there are definitely more than 41.
