The answer to this question would depend on many factors including:
  • the method of communication you are looking to utilize
  • what you class as real time and
  • the price you are willing to spend.
In using the term collaboration I assume you mean it by its definition of two or more items working together towards a goal. To this end we are looking for a communication device that, when linked to another, will provide an instant message or dialog. In this instance the first port of call would be a telephone either wireless or land line. These provide instant communication between two or more points.

Mobile or cell phones, especially in the form of smart phones, can provide instant communication in many forms including text messaging and email as well as telephone conversation. Some devices even allow for the use of an instant messaging service such as Blackberry's messenger service, BBM. This provides Blackberry users with instant communication between devices. Wireless radio devices or 'walkie-talkies' can also provide instant communication, although this can only be in one direction at a time and usually within a certain radius.

If your question relates to a real time communication tool using computers or the internet then, again, there are many options. Services such as Windows Instant Messenger will allow users to interact in real time from computer to computer. Other online services such as Skype will allow a communication connection through two computers that allows the two parties to interact with each other through microphones and web-cameras, therefore working similarly to a telephone.

Most chat room websites and forums also now offer a real time communication service that will allow you to chat with other users across the world. With the advance in technology, real time communication is a common practice.
