Hydrochloric acid is part of the gastric juice found in the stomach. It has a number of functions here. First of all, it aids protein digestion by activating pepsinogen into the protein digesting enzyme pepsin.
It second most important purpose is to keep the stomach microbe free. It kills many types of bacteria that we might ingest in our food. Also, the acidic environment of the stomach also aids the absorption of many nutrients from here such as folic acid, ascorbic acid, zinc, magnesium and some types of calcium.
Often deficiency of hydrochloric acid may lead to bad digestion and assimilation as well as general low immunity. In humans, a normal healthy person would have about 2-3 parts of hydrochloric acid per thousand parts of gastric juice.
