Volume is defined as the measurement of how much space is taken up by an object. The term volume is often used when talking about how much space liquids take up inside a container. However, objects other than liquids can have their volume measured.

Here are some instructions on how to calculate the volume of any object:

  • Step one
Draw the object that you are measuring the volume of out onto paper e.g. Cone, cube, triangle etc. To make the whole process even easier you should draw out your shape on graph paper, as this will help to keep everything constant.

  • Step two
The actual calculation that you will use to work out the volume will depend on the shape because there is a different formula used for each shape. For example, the volume of a cube can be calculated by multiplying the length by the width by the height.

  • Step three
Locate a graduated cylinder that you can then use to measure the actual physical object which can be a paper clip, ball or pencil.

  • Step four
The next step for you to do is to pour water into the graduated cylinder that you located in the previous step. However, you should only pour enough water into the cylinder so that when you place the object into the water it will be completely covered. Make a note of where the water comes up to in the graduated cylinder.

  • Step five
Place the object into the cylinder of water. You will notice that the water will move a little further up the graduation marks. Make note of this measurement so that you can compare the two.

  • Step six
In order to calculate the volume of the object, you should figure out the difference between the two measurements that you have just noted down.
