    Thunderstorms

  1. According to the National Weather Service, a thunderstorm is classified
as severe when winds reach or exceed 58 mph or the storm produces hail
3/4 inch in diameter or larger. Other weather conditions may include
lightning, heavy rain, and flooding. A thunderstorm warning indicates a
storm has been spotted which will be moving through the area soon. You
should remain calm, but take precautionary measures immediately. A
thunderstorm watch signifies storms are very possible, in close
proximity, and damaging winds and large hail may soon develop. You
should prepare to take shelter immediately.
  2. Indoors

  3. When indoors during a thunderstorm, stay off the phone and away from windows. Have flashlights
close by in case the power goes off. Stop using electrical equipment,
unplug appliances and computers, and avoid taking a shower or bath. If
lightning strikes, it can send an electrical current across metal
    plumbing throughout the house.
  4. Driving

  5. If you are driving during a thunderstorm, reduce speed, pull off to the
shoulder of the road (staying away from tall trees), turn on the
emergency flashers, remain in the car until the storm passes, and do
not touch any metal objects in the car. You should remain alert and
watchful for flooded roads and areas.
  6. Outdoors

  7. When outdoors, stay low, keeping away from trees,
tall objects, fences, metal objects and water. If possible, find
shelter in a permanent enclosed sturdy building. If you are with a
group, spread out rather than staying close together. If you are in a
boat, quickly get out and away from the water. If your hair starts to
stand on end or your skin begins to tingle, lightning is about to
strike. Bend forward, placing your hands on your knees, and crouch down
to make yourself the smallest possible target. Do not lie flat on the
    ground.
  8. After the Storm

  9. After the storm has passed, check on neighbors who may need assistance.
Avoid all downed power lines, stay away from storm-damaged areas, and
continue to monitor your local media for the latest weather updates.
