That would give you the perimeter if it is a square. Do you want to know the area of a cube? If side A of a cube was 24cm^2 the total area would be 144cm2 if however the question is, if one side of a square is 24cm long, the area would be 576cm2

A square is a flat shape (two-dimensional) whereby there are four sides and all sides are identical in length; thus, because you are given the length of 1 side (24 cm), you know the length of all four sides.

The question asks for the area of a square; the area of a square is found by simply multiplying any two sides.  As this square has all four sides measuring the same (24 cm), you'd simply multiply one side by itself.  The resulting value would be the area; which, in this case would be 576 cm².
