Why Is The Origin Of Species Controversial?

The bible dictates that the world was created in seven days, and that mankind is descended from Adam and Eve - the first two human beings alive. Of course if this were true, we would all be related. The bible also dictates that the world is far younger than logic would suggest. But as for logic, and science as a matter of fact, the most plausible explanation for human beings is Darwin's theory of the origin of the species.

After making startling discoveries in the Galapagos Islands, Darwin deduced that human beings and in fact all species have evolved over millions of years from common ancestors. Of course in Darwin's day, this theory was considered radical as the western world was still firmly rooted in the belief that the world was created by God in seven days.

After all, Christianity had been around for thousands of years without anything to contradict it. But the human race progressively began to grasp at logic and science, which we can see the world for what it truly is. However, much of the world today still believes in the bible's teachings, and the idea that mankind has descended from apes is considered ludicrous by many. So the simple answer is: Belief.

For so long, religious have beliefs have not only been a way of life, but people are raised to belief it is the absolute truth. If, from your point of view, it has long been established that the world was created as Genesis tells us and someone comes along and tries to tell you we got here due to millions of years of evolution during which time we descended from animals, obviously you would not believe it. You might also consider it blasphemous and therefore wrong - not just factually but morally.

The origin of the species is controversial because several Religious doctrines differ with the scientific theory of evolution. I personally am not conflicted about it. Man wanted and needed an explanation that they could understand. The scriptural texts gave them some. HOwever what is a day in Gods time, and when did he imbue the Spirit of God into man? These are the questions that I feel explain the differences in beliefs.

Your point about what is a day in God's time is what i have felt for decades. "day has so many meanings, in your day (youth), day (24 hours) , the light of day ( period between sunup and sundown.) so why can't 7 days really be 7 million years, for example?

Because there are people out there that take religious texts as literal proven truths, instead of figurative speech aimed at teaching higher morals. Humanity has existed for a very long time, and there is evidence of evolution. Thanks to DNA tests and genetic investigation we do know that there was a "Genetic ADAM" from which all men inherited his Y-chromosome (from about 70,000 years ago). This doesn't mean that he was the only man alive then, but that he, his sons (and so on) had the luck to beat out other males in the taking of mates, reproduction, and having stronger male heirs to the point of turning his genetic inheritance into a monopoly.

There also exists a possible "Genetic EVE" that lived about 10,000 years before "ADAM" did. Her children were more plentiful and robust than the other females of the time, and this trend continued over and over until her genetic material was inherited by every living human today.

With technologies such as dna tests, like from www.dnanow.com we can learn a lot more about our distant pasts and also our closer relations.

TO SCOWAN: Alright, first off, you said that if we came from 2 people, we would all be related... And whats your point? I dont see a problem with that?

Also, how is Evolution the most plausible? That something randomly just exploded and, without any reason whatsoever, there was life? I find that alot harder to believe than creationism...

The galapagos island eh? If i remember correctly, that was where he studied the turtles and birds finding that different island's animals had adapted the best suite their specific island? I would like the point out that 'evolution' is not proof of 'Evolution'. If you think back to before the theory was thought up, and think logically what you can conclude through this is :
1)The animals likely came from a common ancestor
2)They likely changed to ADAPT to their environment.

Now where does this information lead you to the theory that we all came from apes? These changes happened WITHIN THE SAME SPECIES. The birds, were/are still birds, the turtles, were/are still turtles... There was no change in species, and therefore no reason to have come to "The theory of evolution" as a conclusion. Adaptation is normal, evolution is adaptation, however, Evolution is absurd.

I would also like to ask you a couple questions:

1) At what time would you say the Bible was written/thought up?
2) Wouldnt those people, who were the mid-point people between apes and people, realize that they were quite close to apes?
3) If the bible were honestly a pile of lies, why wouldnt it have been ended or at least fought against for the past several thousand years?
4) If Darwin could honestly think up the theory of evolution by just examining a few species and making some results, why wouldnt it have been done several thousand years ago? His conclusions were not completely scientific, and alot of it is belief based, just like any religion
...i have more, but ill leave you with those :P

GUEST:
First off, how were they getting these results you speak off? As far as i am aware, they would use a technique in the same way they would use carbon dating[not with the same 'elements', but still]. Carbon dating, i will first say, is wrong.

I would like to point out the fact that carbon dating is based on a 'estimated number of ____'.Basically, they base all their results for dating of how much carbon is in something. First off, how do they know how much carbon was in something in the first place? Answer: They dont, they werent there, they cant know. Also, how do they know that it loses/gains carbon at a steady rate, perhaps it loses it quickly at the beggining, stops a while, then goes at a slow rate, we cant know. ALSO, how would they know just how much carbon would mean how many years old? Answer: They couldnt...

These DNA tests are likely conducted similarly to carbon dating, or have some similar ideals behind them, and therefore it removes there validity.

ALSO, if the female was there before the male, especially by 10,000 years, it would be impossible for it to survive.

If you have any comments to leave, ANYONE, i would love to hear them!

My brother once studied both Genesis in the bible and the big bang theory and compared them together. Somehow he came to the conclusion that they were both correct if you adjusted God's "day" and the many years of "human" time that it would have taken for the world to be created. He could never explain it to me well enough for me to understand.
Science says we all one day slithered out of the ocean and evolved. My question is, "If we all evolved from apes, then WHY are there STILL apes?" Could it be possible that Adam and Eve were cavemen? Could anyone say that cavemen did not have a spoken language even if there was no evidence of written words during the same time period?
Some people simply cannot have "faith" that something exists. You have to shove the proof in their face for them to see it. How many religious scientists are out there? One's that simply "believe" without being able to explain "why" or "what" or "how"...

If this is how you believe evolution works, no wonder you don't believe it's possible! If you said any of this to a biologist, he would be horrified. Didn't you have science lessons at school? Please have a look at http://evolution.berkeley.edu/evolibrary/search/topicbrowse2.php?topic_id=41 for a start - it could help to clear up some of these very serious misunderstandings which you seem to have about evolution.

God made the whole Gospel so easy, that a child can understand it. But adults try to complicate things by adding in extra junk, twisting the truth, and denying God's existence just because it is too simple to believe He does exist!
Why are we not still evolving? Have we reached perfection? NO! We are created in the Image of a perfect God, but because we are still human, and NOT God, we make mistakes, and are imperfect. Are we so intelligent we can't accept the simplicity of the Gospel?

Controversy arises due to unawareness. Origin of species is controversial because people are unaware of it and everyone tries to solve the mystery behind origin based on his/her knowledge. Science is blind in this field because it still does not have the necessary tools. Anyway, Science keep proving itself wrong time and again.

Unfortunately people who are worried about origin of species, can not understand the meaning of the great religious books. The people who understand these books, they have higher goals to reach.

Do you seriously think that someone capable of understanding the theory of evolution -which you, for example, clearly haven't begun to grasp - is incapable of following a childish fairy tale like the Adam and Eve story? There are no reputable scientists in the world who don't accept the general principles of evolution; even before these theories became current, educated people never believed in the literal truth of 'sacred' texts - they were always supposed to be myths, not history.

Do you seriously think that someone capable of understanding the reality behind so called Myths , can not understand Science and theory of evolution. You have raised a good point : Myth and history. It would nice if you can define both.

Hold up, not to say you cant 'understand it', as in understand what its saying. But perhaps you can understand its simplicity. 2 more things, just because somethings more complicated, doesnt make it right. ALSO, just because more scientists believe in evolution because of whatever reason, doesnt mean that its right. After all, at one point we thought that everything went around the earth...and that was wrong

Why can't you just have faith, and believe the Bible?  It is the truth and the only truth.  It is relatively simple, yet people try to complicate it with all these theories etc.  God created the world, yes we are all related very distnatly from Adam and Eve, the earth is young, and Jesus came to earth, died and rose again for us.  He is God's only Son and He is coming back soon.
There you have it!

While i believe it, simly telling people to have faith isnt going to show them the reason behind what we believe. We need reasons, logic, and to respectively show them the evidence.

But faith is believing in what we can not see. If one has to be proven everything before believing in it, then that is not faith! God is far beyond human logic and explanation, otherwise He would not be God! A person either believes or he does not believe. Our job as Christians is to witness, spread the Gospel Of Jesus and live according to God's Word. The Holy Spirit convicts the lost of their need for Jesus and after that it is their responsibility to accept Jesus.

Most people aren't willing to change what they believe, if they were raised creationists and didn't have an open mind when they read the theory of evolution or abiogenesis they would dismiss the theories. Also for some reason it is supposedly insulting that we descended from the same common ancestor as apes. I still don't understand why that is.
