By definition, Saprophytes are the plants that survive on decaying matter. Saprophytic organisms are scavengers as they live on dead organisms or organic matter and depend on them for food. This means that they are basically recyclers and consume the dead organisms. The term saprophyte is obsolete now because there are no true saprophytes, plants that grow on dead organic matter. They are called now better known Detritivores Examples of these organisms are:

  • Fungi

  • Bacteria

As you can see these organisms are not plants, they belong to distinct categories.
