Because woman and even men will drop you like a bad habit if you can't read. A big red flag.

Dear Anonymous,

What I love about reading is that you can experience the lives/knowledge/insights of another person.

Here is how Lord Dunsany (1878-1957), a founder of the fantasy/SF genre, described the wonders of ink:

“How it can mark a dead man’s thoughts for the wonder of later
years, and tell of happenings that are gone clean away, and be a voice for us out of the dark of time, and save many a fragile thing from the pounding of heavy ages; or carry to us, over the rolling centuries, even a song from lips long dead on forgotten hills.”

That is why reading is important to me, in addition to Megan Goodgirl's fine answer.
