Freud described the human psyche in three parts. The "id" - the basic part that drives us from birth. The needs we require for survival, the need to eat, drink, reproduce, etc. The ego is the part of the personality that consists of our reason and rational behavior. The things we've learned, our intellectual self. The super ego is more commonly known as our conscience. It's the part that controls our behavior, allows us to know right from wrong. It's the part of our personality that's the source of our feelings of guilt. It is supposed to prevent our basest, animal impulses (id) from taking control of our lives.
