Niagara Falls is divided into the American/Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. The Horseshoe Falls drop about 57m(188ft) into the Lower Niagara River. The American/Bridal Veil Falls drop about 57m(188ft). The broken rock at the bottom of the American and Bridal Veil Falls is called talus. This talus reduces the interrupted fall of the water to as little as 21m(70ft). One very interesting fact about the falls is the plunge pool is as high as the falls themselves.

The Niagara Falls is one of the most eye-catching, spell-binding spectacles of North America, on the border between Canada and the United States. On the Canadian side, there are rapids which have 20 to 30 foot high waves. These waves are not because of water splashing over the rocks; the water is about 40 feet deep here. In fact, this is one of the few places where rapids are caused by a huge body of water falling rather steeply through a narrow gorge. Very few kayakers would risk travelling through these rapids.
Niagara Falls is known to have moved up the Niagara River at a rate of 5 feet a year for the last 12,500 years. The whirlpool area, where you find soft sediments rather than rock is about 125 feet deep.
