Making a satellite is a very complex project and requires many years of hard work but still the proof that the satellite is functional only comes when it is launched successfully. On October 4, 1957, the Russians became the first nation to successfully launch a satellite called “Sputnik I”. It wasn’t very large and was around the size of a beach ball and had a weight of just around 83 kilograms. It was decided in 1954 to develop artificial satellites to take full advantage of the increased solar activity that was expected in 1957. In response to this, the US funded their own program and launched their own satellite in 1958 called Explorer 1.
