Several things come out of a volcano, actually! These can be divided into three things – solids, liquids, and gases.

Solids
The solids that come out of a volcano are usually cinders, ashes, bits of solidified lava, and parts of the volcano’s cone that have broken off.

Liquids
Lava, or the hot orange stuff, will either pour or fountain out of the volcano. The bigger the eruption, the faster it leaves the volcano.

Lava can either be thick and sticky or thin and runny, depending on how hot it is. Once it solidifies, the lava becomes molten rock (that charred black stuff that you often see around volcanoes).

Gases
It’s not just the lava that can be dangerous - some of the gases that leave the volcano are toxic to breathe in. Volcanoes get really hot, so they also produce a lot of steam.

There are a different types things that come out of a volcano. Magma turns into lava when it reaches the top of the surface. Otherwise it's lava, ash, gases, steam and bits of rock.

Lava, magma and ash.

Did you know that magma is only magma inside the volcano? Lava is magma when it reaches the surface. Rock fragments, gases, steam, ash and cinders also come out of volcanoes.
