The largest sea in the world is the Pacific Ocean, which covers more than a third of the world's surface area. In total, the Pacific covers an an area of 165.2 million square kilometres. Its name comes from the Latin, Mare Pacificum, meaning peaceful sea, the Pacific was given its nomenclature by the famous Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan. The Pacific is for the greater part uninhabited. The largest landmass within the Pacific Ocean is the island of New Guinea. The remaining islands are mostly found between 30°N and 30°S, primarily from South-east Asia to Easter Island. Of course, there is the well known South Pacific islands which form a triangle, i.e. From Hawaii to Easter Island and thence to New Zealand. Also lying with this triangle are are such island groups and atolls as the Cook Islands, Marquesas, Samoa, Society, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuamotu, Tuvalu and Wallis and Futuna islands.
