Sandstone is the name of a type of sedimentary rock. It gets its name from the fact that it is made of sand that has been integrated by some sort of cementing substance like clay, quartz which contain iron oxide or calcium carbonate. It is also made of sand-sized grains and is easily identifiable due to their coarse, granular and sandy texture. The hardness and colour of sandstones may vary according to the material in it and are found in colours like tan, brown, red, grey and white.

It is resistant to wearing but can easily be worked on. It is used to for several purposes including building. Sandstone is made of the deposits of sand and is often found near water bodies. It can also be formed as a result of sedimentation by air. Thus it occurs in both terrestrial environments and marine environments. Rivers, lakes and deserts are terrestrial environments while deltas, beaches storm deposits etc are examples of marine environments for sandstone.
