Florida is a southern state making up part of the United States of America. The 2009 census showed Florida to have a population of 18,537,969 people. The largest city in Florida by population and size is the city of Jacksonville, which has a population of roughly 821,784 people. This makes it over double the size of the next largest city in terms of population.
Second on the list of largest cities is Miami, which holds a rough population of 399,457. Tampa is third on the list of cities, boasting a population of 335,709. These cities are followed by Saint Petersburg, fourth with a population of 244,769, and Orlando, populated by 238,300 people.
Tallahassee is the capital city of the state of Florida, however, despite this, Tallahassee is much smaller than many of Florida’s cities, only the seventh largest city in Florida with 181,376 people. In terms of size by land mass, Jacksonville still boasts to be the largest city in Florida, followed by Tampa. Jacksonville is the fourth largest city in the United States of America by land mass, and the largest city outside of Alaska.
The land mass figures do not include areas of water, therefore disqualifying cities such as the Californian city of San Francisco, which is made up of nearly 80 per cent water. Other large cities in Florida include Hialeah with a population of 224,669 and Fort Lauderdale with a population of 165,521. The cities of Pembroke Pines and Cape Coral hold populations of 154,750 and 154,305 respectively.
It is also worth noting that Florida is a popular tourist destination and these figures only include residents of the cities, and do not reflect the amount of tourists that visit these cities each year.
