I have no idea I want to know the answer to the same question so if you know please tell
With its widespread collection of islands, Indonesia is definitely the world's largest archipelago. The number of the islands is so vast that Indonesia has still not been able to determine the correct figure after several attempts nevertheless the official figure remains at 17000 islands. However this huge figure is envisaged to drop in the upcoming years according to the prediction of some experts as they claim that many islands, maybe in the figures of hundreds have a risk of vanishing from the face of the Earth attributing to the rising sea levels being a direct consequence of global warming.
Judging from this prediction, Indonesia is speeding up its attempts to determine the accurate number of islands that are present within its realms before the drastic prediction of the experts comes true. The attempts were further catalyzed by the various types of concerns ranging from the issue of sovereignty conflicts to climatic change speculations. The importance of the issue had further gained momentum after the recent tiff between Indonesia and Singapore where the former accused the latter of sand mining that literally contributed towards the disappearance of many Indonesian islands from the face of the world.
