White Sand may be any of a number of materials.  It may be silica, ie silicon dioxide or gypsum, ie calcium sulfate.  It may calcium carbonate from the shells of marine mollusks.  In general, white sands have their origins in sedimentary rocks. Igneous rocks tend to be dark in color, black, gray maybe red.
