What makes two substances different is the molecular make up. If a substance has a molecular structure it differs from another in:
1. The amount of atoms in the molecule
2. Which atoms are in the molecule
3. The arrangement of the atoms in the molecule.

All molecules are made up of atoms. There are many different atoms and what makes them different is the amount of protons in the nucleus of the atom.

We can tell two substances apart by their properties. Properties can include:
1. Melting and boiling points.
2. Solubility in water
3. Electrical conductivity
4. Transparency
5. Colour
6. How and what it chemically reacts with
