The modern seismograph was invented in in the late 1800's and accurate record keeping was started around 1900. Since 1900 the largest registered earthquake was in Chile in 1960. It measured 9.5 on the Richter scale. The largest US quake was in Alaska in 1964. It measured 9.2.
