The ferric chloride test is necessary because it determines the purity of the aspirin you have synthesized. When salicylic acid is added to ferric chloride it turns dark purple, indicating an OH group. Since acetylsalicylic acid does not have an OH group, it should not turn purple when added to ferric chloride. If it does, it shows that you do not have pure acetylsalicylic Acid.
