The average temperature in Antarctica is a chilling -49 degrees C. Therefore it is 49 degrees under freezing point that is 0 degrees C. The average mean temperature of Antarctica in summer is 0F and winter is 70F.

The temperature of Antarctica varies according to region. The coasts of Antarctica have comparatively milder temperatures reaching freezing point only in summer. The highest temperatures are on the high polar plateau. At the South Pole the temperatures vary from -20c to -70 in winter. The lowest ever temperature on the surface of the earth has been recorded at the Vostok Station a Soviet base in Antarctica- -89.6 degrees C (-129 degrees F). This temperature is sufficient to shatter steel.

There are various stations in Antarctica which record temperatures. At the Palmer Station the average annual temperature is -3C, at the McMurdo Station it is -17 C and at the South Pole Station it is -48C.

Antarctica is not only the coldest continent but also the driest. The annual mean temperature in Antarctica has increased by about 2.5 degrees Celsius over a period of fifty years.

I have just come from a cruise in Antartica and being summer, it was much warmer then that. Deception Island and Jan Lemaire Island were in the region of 4-8 degrees celsius.

Antarctica is basically the southernmost continent which comprises of the South Pole. Antarctica has the coldest climate on earth. The temperature in this region touches a minimum of -85 degrees C a -90 degrees C during the winter season, and is around 20 degrees C higher during summers. The most common health issue faced in this region is sun burn as the snow plane reflects around ninety percent of the sunlight that falls on it.

The eastern region is much colder than the western region because of it higher altitude. Weather fronts hardly get to infiltrate far into the continent, which mostly leaves the central region cold and dry. In spite of low rainfall in the central region, the ice here still manages to stay for long periods. The costal region faces heavy snowfall, where snowfalls nearly up to 1.22 meters have been recorded within forty eight hours.

The Antarctic weather helps to control the climate of all the globe. It produces more cold air than any other place in the world. The ice-crisp air rolls down the polar slopes toward the coast, building up to gusts of 140 to 145 miles (225 to 233 kilometres) per hour along the coastline. In fact, wind chill has proved to be the most debilitating factor in Antarctic exploration. Eventually, this wind sweeps across Chile and Argentina and parts of Australia and New Zealand, thus contributing greatly to the "air conditioning" of our home, the Earth.

The Antarctic Ocean actually is part of the earth's one great ocean. It converges with the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. But it has characteristics peculiar to itself. It is colder and less salty than are the oceans to the north. Cold ocean waters move northward, then sink below the warmer waters at the "convergence" where the Antarctic Ocean meets the northern oceans and spreads far north beyond the equator. When the waters flowing southward in the western parts of the other oceans meet the cold Antarctic waters, they turn eastward to form the Circumpolar Current, which travels in an irregular path completely around the earth in the vicinity of 47° to 61° south latitude.
