People who read engineering drawings are accustomed to the location and meaning of data presented in standard ways. When data is not present or is presented in non-standard ways, errors in reading the drawing occur and/or extra time is consumed sorting out the meaning. Such delay reduces manufacturing productivity (and gives the engineer and/or drafter a bad reputation). Parts may cost more, and customer satisfaction may suffer.

In short, working to recognized standards facilitates communication all around.
