According to the World Bank, the term extreme poverty is defined as the economic condition in which a person lives on less than one United States dollar per day. According to the statistics released by the World Bank in the year 2001, it was estimated that about approximately 1.1 billion people had a level of consumption which was less than one United States dollar per day. On the other hand, it was estimated that about approximately 2.7 billion people had a level of consumption which was less than two United States dollars per day.
It is, however, heartening to note that the proportion of the total population of people living in extreme poverty in the developing countries of the world fell from about 28 per cent in the year 1990 to about 21 per cent in the year 2001.
