When an atom loses electrons and other atom gains that electrons, these ions are combined to form an ionic bond. Mostly, ionic bond is present between metals and non-metals. Ionic compounds are mostly categorized as salts and are solids at room temperature. Electrostatic force is present between two ions in an ionic compound. Ionic compounds are hard and brittle. The elements have ionic bond do not conduct electricity. But ionic compounds can conduct electricity in molten and solution form. Most of the ionic compounds are soluble in water. Ionic compound are insoluble in non-polar solvents. Ionic bonds are very strong so, ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points.
