The smallest island in the world is the Bishop Rock; it is situated towards the extreme south-westerly section of the United Kingdom.

It is said to be one of the 1040 islands all across Britain and simply lighthouse on it. The island has space for nothing more than the unoccupied 45 meter tall lighthouse; the island plays the part of a barrier amid the British Isles and the Atlantic Ocean. The initial lighthouse was established in the year 1847, but was washed away prior to its completion.

The current structure was made in the year 1858. Bishop Rock is also said to be the eastern end of the North Atlantic shipping route which was often taken by ocean liners throughout the first half of the 20th century.
