Rome's population, according to the latest census in 2001, was 3,849,487 for the entire province of Rome while the corresponding census figure for just the city of Rome itself was 2,655,970. A subsequent 2005 estimate by the UN Population division put the city of Rome's population at 2,628,000 out of a total Italian population of 57,253,000. Other recent estimates have put the city's population marginally lower but it can safely be said that the inhabitants of the city today number at least two and a half million. Rome has twice the population of its nearest Italian city rival for number of inhabitants, Milan.
Rome's population today is more than double that of Ancient Rome at its peak, which was an estimated one million people. However this was a huge population for the ancient world. Even bigger was the figure for the number of people Ancient Rome ruled through its empire - up to 50 million people.
