Many maps have been made but Gerard us Mercator, in 1569, made the first map usable for nautical navigation. It was hard to represent the round earth on a flat map so Mercator sliced the globe into wedges like an orange. He then pealed those wedges, again like an orange, and placed the peeling's side by side on a flat map. It became known as the Mercator Projection.
