Soil is a mixture of substances and salts. As there are many different types of soil, its impossible that they would all consist of one chemical alone.

What makes a plant grow in soil is actually the presence of certain chemicals and elements. As soil is a mixture of these, and also other organic compounds (dead plants, feces, rotten fruit, for example).

All soils are different, but some soils have higher concentrations of certain chemicals than others.
