What Is Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation?

Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation are two main types of motivation. Intrinsic motivation happens when the learning activity and learning environment creates motivation in  a person. There is no reward for achievement in this kind of motivation. On the other hand extrinsic motivation is the one that comes from outside the performer. People are prompted through punishments or rewards and their motivation is controlled.

Intrinsic motivation occurs when learning activity and learning environment elicit motivation. The person is not motivated directly but rather it is created, through teaching, opportunities that can evoke motivation.

The following help to create the intrinsic motivation:

When the rewards of learning are meaningful to the learner
When learning is important to the person
When learning assists the learners in integrating themselves with the world, and thus promotes self-awareness.

On the other hand, an extrinsic motivation refers to motivation which comes from outside an individual. The motivating factors are external rewards such as money or grades etc. These provide satisfaction that the task itself may not provide.
Such person will work on a task even when he has little interest in it because of the anticipated pleasure he will get from some reward.

Intrinsic motivation comes from within ourselves. Example: I want to pass this exam, but I'm not motivated to do the writing.

Extrinsic motivation comes from outside ourselves. Example: I don't give a rip about this subject, but my professor won't pass me unless I do the writing.
