The best way would be to become familiar with the breeds of cattle usually farmed and the prices you would be likely to pay to build up your stock - you can see examples here bur of course it depends on whether you are mainly interested in beef or dairy farming. You could also contact an organisation such as the dairy farmers association and ask for some advice from the members.
