According to the volume, the Amazon River is the largest river of the world; it flows through the region of South America. It is also the second longest river, second only to the Nile. The source of the river is Apacheta cliff in Peru and it has a total length of 6400 kilometers. It is so huge that no bridge crosses over it. The river passes through seven, not nine countries. These countries are:

  • Peru (source)

  • Colombia

  • Brazil

  • Bolivia

  • Venezuela

  • Ecuador

  • Guyana

The Amazon is the second longest river in the world second only to the Nile river of Africa with a length of 6,516 km (4,049 miles).
The Amazon originates in the Andes Mountains in Peru near to the Pacific Ocean and after traversing the entire length of the South American continent flows in to the Atlantic Ocean; the drainage area of the Amazon is the largest among all other rivers on Earth (6,915,000 sq km). The Amazon has over a 1000 tributaries like the Purus, Madeira, Yapura and Tocanins among others.

The countries through which the entire Amazon system including its tributaries flows are Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Columbia and Ecuador. The principal course of the Amazon mainly flows through Brazil and Peru; much of the Amazon system (about 62%) flows through Brazil. The region through which the Amazon flows is home to the largest rainforests in the world housing an infinitely varied number of plants, animals, birds and insects.
