The intestines stuck between the stomach and rectum, are an important part of the digestive system. Digestion is a very complex procedure which involves many organs, nerves, hormones and many other chemical messengers.

The small and the large intestine both have varied but related roles in digestion. Both these intestines perform the role of breaking down food with enzymes and supply it to the bloodstream for distribution throughout the body. In this way food is transformed into nutrient forms proficient of giving the organ with energy to work and grow.

Junctions located between the cells lining and the intestines are firm, therefore in order to go to the other side of the wall of the intestine, food has to be supplied right through the thin layers of cells, to the capillaries located on the other side.

It helps break down food with enzymes and sends it away on its journey to the anus wich is the exit. To learn more about the digestive sytem and other parts of the body go to the following websites- www.digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/yrrd/
