There are 4 main goals in the field of psychology. These are:

• Description
• Explanation
• Prediction
• Changing the behavior of the individual

Psychology is the study of the human mind and how the mind reacts to the environment it is in, including changes and difficulties that people may experience.

The description of behavior is needed to understand what the accepted form of behavior is. By observing a person's behavior it is possible to see how they are feeling, what their thoughts and goals are, and how they react to certain situations.

The explanation of behavior is the next stage that is looked into. The personality, development and reactions to situations are looked into in depth. These explanations will vary depending on certain cultures and situations, but it is believed that there are fundamental behaviors that all people should have. Theorists in the field of psychology have differing views when explaining behavior and some of these theorists are:

• Sigmund Freud
• Karl Jung
• Carl Rogers The prediction of how individuals will react in certain situations is normally based on past experiences that the individual would have had. These predictions can then influence how a person is dealt with in the final stage, the changing of the behavior, if this is needed.

People are encouraged to change their behavior for the better if it is believed that this will benefit them in the long term. There are a variety of methods used in the changing of behavior, and these include:

• Gestalt
• Humanism
• Cognitive
• Existentialism
• Behaviorism

The methods that are used in analyzing and the changing of behavior depend entirely on the practitioner that a person is seeing, as many psychologists favor different methods.

Personal opinion.  I am not spouting the Googled textbook answer.  I think the goal is to empower people to define themselves as separate and special individuals and yet function  together in a group such as a family or community, contributing to the whole without losing their own sense of self worth.

Psychology is derived from the ancient Greek word for soul. The aim is to understand the workings of the mind rather than the body, though psychology certainly includes study of the brain as a physical organ as well as looking at things like the impact of life experiences on our personalities. Ultimately a psychologist would hope to understand what is necessary for good mental health, and the ways the mind works in different situations.
