The Himalayas are an extensive mountain range in south-central Asia, extending about 2,414 km through Kashmir, northern India, southern Tibet, Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan. Nine out of the world's ten highest peaks are included in the Himalayas, one of which is Mount Everest. The glaciers and snow of the mountains are a source of 19 major rivers, including the Ganges.
The Himalayas are interjected by many roads and tracks. Aeroplanes reach remote regions too. Railroads reach the southern foothills, after which the main route follows footpaths across ropeways, old bridges and mountain passes. Roads run between Kashmir and China and from India through Nepal to China. There are also major airports at Srinagar and Katmandu. While tourists fond of adventure head towards the high Himalayas, a great number of tourists visit the hill resorts such as Shimla, Nainital, Darjeeling, Mussoorie and other retreats during summers.
