When the pollutants that are put into the air by cars and factories collect in the atmosphere, rain can absorb these pollutants and bring that back down to the earth's surface. The major downsides of this can be many. Three big ones are our own water supply being poisoned by atmospheric mercury from coal fire plants among many other air pollutants. Since mercury is not a filtered substance in almost every water treatment plant in America, it goes right through to our faucets. Another is toxic soil from acid rain that farmers try to grow our food supply in. This in turn creates unhealthy vegetation and can bring the toxins to our dinner table. The last can be from rain water being funneled into rivers and then dumped into our oceans where these pollutants, mainly mercury, gets into the fish, shrimp, crab and lobsters that we eat. This creates a bunch of nasty problems with humans. My mother actually got a autoimmune disease from mercury poisoning. It permanently damaged her thyroid gland. Which is VERY important in living a healthy happy life.
