The larynx is one of the components of the human body that forms part of the respiratory tract. It guards the passage to the airways that lead to the lungs. This is one of the critical functions of the larynx. This function ensures that the airways are open, which means we get to breathe. Therefore, the larynx is a key component to the fact of our existence, as without the ability to breathe, we would be dead. Besides, this function, when we are eating, the entrance to the larynx shuts down, which ensures no food gets into the windpipe, which leads to the lungs. There is no chance of any food slipping into the windpipe, which can otherwise cause serious complications.

Besides this important function, the other function that the larynx performs, though at a secondary level, is enable voice generation. This is not a direct function of the larynx. The larynx actually just acts as the place where the vocal cords reside. The vocal chords are responsible for generating voice and other such sound.

Larynx is an organ situated in the neck of mammals
It is more commonly known as the 'Adam's apple'
It has several functions which are listed below.
The three basic functions are:
  • Generation of sound including voice pitch and volume;
  • The airway passage is guarded by it hence keeping the passage open for breathing; and
  • While eating the entrance to larynx is shut which prevents food from entering the windpipe therefore preventing choking.

The trachea opens out at the back of the throat to form the larynx. At the entrance to the larynx is the epiglottis, a cartilaginous flap which closes over the larynx when we swallow food. Just inside the larynx are flaps of tissue, the 'vocal cords', which in conjunction with the epiglottis and the resonance of the larynx itself produce the noises we know as our voice.

The larynx is also known as the voicebox.  It houses the "vocal folds" which, when brought close together, vibrate as air is passed through them, producing sound.  Muscle manipulation of the vocal folds control frequency and pitch.

It is a sort of system in the mammals and is usually called the voice box because it contains the vocal cords. It is made up of four main components which are cartilaginous skeleton, extrinsic muscles, intrinsic muscles, and a mucosal lining.  The extrinsic muscles connect the thyroid, arytenoid and cricoid cartilages in the cartilaginous skeleton to the head and neck while the intrinsic muscles control the position and shape of the vocal folds.

The main function performed by the larynx is helping in swallowing, breathing and speaking. It controls the production, articulation and resonance of the voice. Most of the problems of the larynx are curable and disorders don't cause death until the condition is too severe which happens very rarely.

You can see the exact anatomy of the Larynx.
