CAUSES OF TYPHOON ONDOY
1. Typhoons are naturally occurring weather patterns and are common to the Philippines (and have been long before all the hype regarding global warming). Whatever causes the many typhoons that hit the Philippines each year caused this one.
2. The damage was increased by clogged drain-ways. Many mayors and barangay captains were not following city ordinances on waste management and as a result, the city could not handle the huge amount of water.
3. Certain reservoirs were not properly drained before the event to allow for increased water storage.
4. Lack of sophistication in weather alert systems and corrupted/partially incompetent government structure contributed to the lack of preparation.
