Afforestation is a modern development in the history of mankind and modern society and is an attempt to lessen the effect of man's thumb on nature's balance. It is the the establishment of a forest in a place where there was not one before, or in a place where trees were harvested to the point of extinction. The goal of this activity is to increase the capture of carbon, and to help to preserve the biodiversity of life in the region.

In many places on the planet today, forests need help to grow because of environmental factors. In many of the arid regions of the planet, once a forest cover had been destroyed the land may very well become dry and no longer ideal for the growth of new trees. Other factors such as the land being used as grazing land for goats and other livestock, or a loss of topsoil make it hard to return it to a forest environment.

Some of the places on the planet where afforestation is now taking place include Brazil, where the loss of the Amazon forest over the past several decades has started to have an effect on the environment. China is now finally reversing a trend of over-harvesting trees though it may take years before any real benefit is realized due to the extent of deforestation. Several countries in Africa are now finally starting to get on the afforestation bandwagon as well, but the benefits will not be seen for several decades.

Afforestation is an effective tool in the halt of global warming as well as making sure there is wood to harvest for the coming generations. Trees are essential in taking harmful carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and replacing it with fresh oxygen. Expect the practice to gain more acceptance in the coming years.

Planting of trees or seeds in order to transform open land into forest or woodland is termed as afforestation. It can also refer to giving land the status of 'royal forest'.  Afforestation stops the earth from eroding and helps with water supply.  It is a rich source of wildlife.  It helps cool the earth and rid the air of carbon dioxide, giving out oxygen which is essential for life.

Planting of trees or seeds in order to transform open land into forest or woodland is termed as afforestation. It can also refer to giving land the status of 'royal forest'. Afforestation is not to be confused with reforestation, which is another related term. Reforestation involves using native trees to restock already existing depleted forests. Most countries have seen rapid decline in forest cover since the dawn of the industrial revolution. Hence, both government and Non-governmental organisations (NGO's) have been directly propagating afforestation & reforestation programs. Afforestation and reforestation can go a long way in minimizing the Green House effect. These are relatively quick, easy to accomplish options with no economic penalties. It is a viable option to reduce net emissions. The essential benefits that these programs include climate stabilization, food and forest products.
